My science project is about what material can filter the water best. The reason why I want to do this science project is because water is the basic essential to life. People can live up to a week or better without food, but can only live 2-3 days without water. Clean water can be hard to find if you get stranded or there is an emergency. Sometimes you probably need some water filtration supplies to clean the water , you must be able to strain out impurities that can make you sick. So this is the reason why I want to do this science experiment.Maybe from this experiment ,I can find some supplies that can make the water filtration successful, and I can also make sure which material works best when it's filtering the water.
In my opinion, I think that the cotton is the best material to filter the water. The reason why I think that is because
maybe cottons can clean and get the dirty things which we can’t see. I predict that about 50% of dirty water is those
tiny, dirty bacteria and impurities. Also, the cottons maybe can filter the water by let dirty things stuck on them.
So, this is the way that we think that cotton is the best material to filter the water.
Many people think that the activated carbon is a good material to filter the water, because it can remove taste and
odor of the dirty water. But unfortunately activated carbon is use in the home filtration system, so that people can’t
use it to filter the water by their own system. So I know that activated carbon use chemical things to filter water.
In my opinion, I think if we use chemical things (like activated carbon) to filter the water, it’s not better than if we
use natural things to filter water, because we can make sure that is safer to use natural things, the reason is that
those things like rock don’t have any chemical things inside of them. I afraid if the chemical substances will mix with
the water, that’s dangerous if people drink that water.
How about small rocks? Will they filter the water as well as cotton? I don’t think so. If we use small rocks to
filter the water, it won’t change anything, so that means the water is still dirty. Some people said those small rocks
can also take out some sand that we cannot see. Oppositely, after I did my experiment, only the cotton took out those
sands, because I can see there are many thin, tiny sands stuck on the cotton.
As a result, I think cotton is the best material to filter the water. But unfortunately, it wouldn’t just clean the
water in one time; you need to repeat to do filtrations in many times. If I do like this as our procedure, I probably
can make sure the water which I filtered after the experiment it’s safe for us to drink. So my result is that you need
to do the same procedure like this for many times by using the best filtration material----- Cotton!
